ALBURGH - Alan G. Darby, age 72, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024 surrounded by his loving family at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh.
He was born October 31, 1951 in St. Albans to the late Arthur & Freida (Schoolcraft) Darby.
Alan was a tried-and-true farmer. He dedicated his life to the Darby Farm, owning and operating it as the 6th generation in the Darby family from 1975 to 2003. Alan enjoyed every season on the farm, fixing fence and turning out the cows in the spring, putting up hay in the summer, cutting wood in the fall, and moving snow in the winter creating countless memories with Dad, Uncle Alan, Darby, Darb or Big Al for many friends and family who will never forget their time at the Darby Farm. Alan enjoyed watching the farm develop into what it is today under the ownership of his daughter and son-in-law. Alan savored his role helping on the farm and always wanted to start the day as the first one stocking the farm stand. With a heart as vast as the sprawling fields, Alan's generosity and willingness to help a neighbor inspired all who knew him.
Whether starting a good conversation about the weather, savoring the first ripe tomato of the year, or making his weekly phone calls to loved ones, Alan found joy in the simple moments of life. He always took care of his family, and cherished the time he spent with his children, and grandchildren. On holidays and birthdays his only request was to see his family. Alan was always happiest when surrounded by his family and friends.
He is survived by his three daughters, Tracey Darby, Heather Darby and her husband Ron Hermann, and Charity Darby; two grandsons, Flint Darby-Hermann, and Ford Nephew; his sisters, Louise Shaw and her husband Joe, Nancy Davis, and Connie Merrimen and her husband Donald; a special nieces and nephews, Laura Dudley, Travis Gervais, Melissa Tobias; his best friend and "Bro", Tom Sombric; and several nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Alan was predeceased by his parents, Arthur & Freida Darby.
A memorial to honor Alan's life will be held at the farm later this summer, a fitting tribute to the place that held his heart for so many years.
