MONTGOMERY CENTER / GLOVER - Alvira B. Arel, age 97, passed away Sunday afternoon September 11, 2011 at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover.
She was born August 14, 1914 in Montgomery Center the daughter of the late Clyde & Louise (Lumbra) Tevyaw.
Alvira was a graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. As a young woman she worked at the Sheldon Poor Farm where she met her future husband Maxwell Arel. Alvira & Maxwell were married July 4, 1940. They owned and operated a farm in Montgomery Center on Route 242 and during that time she also worked at Chaffees IGA. She then worked as a psychiatric nurse for the State of Vermont at the State Hospital in Waterbury and a boarding home in Burlington for 16 years retiring in 1977.
When living in Montgomery she was an active member of the Montgomery Community Baptist Church and she was a former member of the Montgomery Grange. Alvira enjoyed crocheting, embroidering and cooking. Following Maxs death she spent countless hours with her cousin Evelyn Hart, shopping and going out to eat. She especially loved to spend time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Larry Arel and his wife Susie of Lowell, Charles Chuck Arel and his wife Jackie of Vergennes, and Carlotta Corcoran and her companion Allen Stevens of Irasburg; her grandchildren, (Larrys Children) Patrick Arel and his wife Gina of Lowell, Laura Staib and her husband Lonnie of Alaska, Shannon Driver and her husband Jason of Jay; (Chucks Children) Jeremy Arel and Josh Arel and his wife Abby all of Vergennes; and (Carlottas children) Jamie Corcoran of Pennsylvania, and Tiffany Little of Irasburg; 8 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Arel of New Hampshire. Besides her parents, Alvira was predeceased by her husband Maxwell Arel on December 1, 1979; and her sister Doris Tevyaw.
A memorial service will be held Friday September 16, 2011 at 12:00 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Rev. Jason McConnell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheldon Village Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 AM until the hour of the funeral.
