Beverly A. Murphy

May 30, 1935 — August 30, 2021

Beverly Ann (Jaibur) Murphy of West River, Maryland and Canaan, Vermont passed away on August 30, 2021 at the age of 86 after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her family.

Beverly was born in Winooski, VT on May 30, 1935 as the youngest of three children to Julia and Louis Jaibur. She attended Cathedral High School in Burlington, VT and graduated as her class valedictorian in 1953, an accomplishment she proudly reminded her grandchildren of regularly. The first person in her family to attend college, she graduated from Trinity College in Burlington as the class president in 1957, and began teaching at Winooski High School that same year. She married the love of her life, Peter Murphy on October 5, 1957.

In 1960, Peter and Beverly moved from Vermont to Washington, DC for work obligations. They then moved their growing family of four children overseas in 1969, and spent the majority of the next two decades abroad in Africa and the Middle East. Beverly loved her life overseas and enjoyed socializing in the local expat community. In 1980, Beverly and Peter built their retirement home on the shores of Lake Champlain in Colchester, VT and later moved to Lake Wallace, Canaan, VT. For the next 40 years, they divided their time between Vermont and Maryland to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Lovingly known as ‘Mimi’ by her eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, Mimi’s greatest joys in life came from her family and friends. She had many cherished friendships with close friends from all stages of her life. Beverly enjoyed cooking and gardening, and was an active member of her quilting group for over 20 years.  She had a fun-loving and charismatic personality, and a way of making everyone around her feel uniquely loved and special. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

She is survived by Peter Murphy, her husband of 63 years, of West River, MD, and three children Valerie (Joseph) Hickey of Finksburg, MD, Matthew (Amy) Murphy of La Plata, MD, and Vanessa (Tom) Krehely of Pasadena, MD.  She was grandmother to eight grandchildren, Josh (Jessica), Nathan (Maggie), and Daniel Murphy; Lauren (Justin) and Michael Hickey; and Shannon, Hannah, and Zach Krehely; and five great grandchildren Abbey, Ethan, Jude, Charlie, and Ben Murphy.  She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Julia Jaibur, siblings Gerald Jaibur and Barbara King, and son, Frank Murphy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Saint Michael’s College Chapel, 810 Campus Rd, Colchester, VT 05439. Internment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery, 200 Hinesburg Rd, South Burlington, VT 05403.
