ENOSBURG FALLS - Blanche A. Gelbar, age 89, widow of Landon Gelbar, passed away Sunday evening October 5, 2008 at the Franklin County Rehab Facility in St. Albans.
She was born in Fletcher on September 4, 1919 the daughter of the late Lee & Mildred (Fletcher) Maynard.
Blanche was a longtime resident of West Enosburg and Enosburg Falls and was a faithful member of the West Enosburg United Methodist Church and the Church Womens Group, giving her time to many church bazaars.
Blanche was a devoted wife, mother grandmother and homemaker and will be remembered for her famous chocolate fudge, chocolate frosting, and Courtin Pie . In her later years birthday and Christmas presents to her family were replaced with her chocolate fudge. She also enjoyed knitting mittens for her grandchildren and other family members. Blanche and Landon loved to dance and enjoyed going to the Mermaid Room at the Dairy Center on Saturday nights.
She is survived by a son Alan and his wife Betty of Rutland; 4 daughters, Suzanne Marshall and her husband James of Berkshire, Linda Carpenter and her husband Roy of Enosburg, Nancy Severance and her husband George of Sheldon, and Sally Gelbar of Enosburg; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren; 2 brothers, John Maynard and his wife Marjorie of East Fairfield, and William Maynard and his wife Kathleen of Springfield; 2 sisters, Pauline Tanner of Springfield, and Marie Sleeper and her husband Norman of St. Johnsbury; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Blanche was predeceased by her husband, Landon Gelbar; a daughter, Barbara Colburn; a grandson, Gary Colburn; and 2 sisters, Marjorie Bullis, and Rhoda McGinn.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning October 9, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the West Enosburg Methodist Church with Rev. John Bly officiating. Interment will follow in the Enosburgh Center Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 5-8 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
