Charles Colburn

February 21, 1940 — December 30, 2008

ENOSBURG FALLS - Charles Elbridge Colburn - Charley, age 68, passed away unexpectedly on December 30, 2008. He was born February 21, 1940 in Greensboro, VT. He married Brenda Mayo nearly 47 years ago, on January 13, 1962. She survives him, along with their children, Tammie & Michel Consejo of Sheldon; Kimberley & Daniel Melhuish of Bakersfield; Stephanie & Kevin Eddy of Milton; Jeffrey & Susan Colburn of Enosburg Falls; and Danielle Colburn of Burlington; and grandchildren, Joshua & Kate Larose; Sherry Larose & Benjamin Gorton; Jeremiah, Michelle, & Deborah Melhuish; Fletcher & Johanna Eddy; and Joshua Gervais & Bradyn Colburn.

Charley was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Alice (Logan) and his sister, Betty. He is survived by his sisters and brothers, Richard Colburn and his fiance, Joyce Bordo of St. Albans; Albert John & Pamela Colburn of Enosburg Falls; Donald & Lynn Colburn of New Hampshire; Virginia & Bruce Davis of Richford; Barbara & Richard Latimer of Burlington; and Colleen & Michael Naylor of New Mexico. He is also survived by his in-laws, Harvey & Jean Mayo of St. Albans; Suzanne Richard of Milton; and Harmon & Janet Mayo of Bakersfield. Charley was also blessed to have numerous nieces and nephews who loved coming to Uncle Charley's and Aunt Brenda's home; it was always filled with kids of all ages.

He served our country in the U.S. Air Force, after which he returned to Enosburg Falls to raise his family. Charley was such a generous man to so many people, especially children, the elderly, and anyone who needed a helping hand or a hot meal. In addition to working at IBM, he enjoyed visiting with his customers immensely, whether at the store, or by mowing lawns, or selling pumpkins and apples in his front yard. He found great joy in providing free creemees to hundreds of young baseball players every year after each home game, even the opposing teams. Charley's Quick Stop was a destination. He had a special kinship with animals as well, and would regularly bring home stray pets to join the family. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, horseshoes and golfing, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family firing up the grill and listening to the Yankees on the radio.

If you knew Charley, you also know that while he was so generous to others, he was a humble man and did not want others to make a fuss over him. He wanted us to keep everything simple. To honor his wishes, there were no calling hours. His funeral took place on Friday, January 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the Enosburg Falls Methodist Church, where four generations of the Colburn family have worshipped and been married, baptized, and bid farewell. Immediately following the service will be a light lunch at the church. From there, the family will spend some private time to complete his wishes.
