SWANTON - Dan Bartlett, longtime resident of northern Vermont, died peacefully on July 18th at the University of Vermont Medical center after a brief illness at the age of 79. Dan was born on October 10th, 1944, in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late Alvah L. Bartlett and Maedean (Carter) Bartlett. His family moved from Philadelphia to Richford, VT in 1950 and Dan graduated from Richford High School in 1962. After high school he became a member of the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. In 1965 he began working at General Electric in Burlington, where he met his wife, Nancy D. (Garen) Bartlett. They married in 1968 and had two children, Tamara and Thomas, and they resided in Burlington. During that time, Dan enjoyed gatherings with his family and friends by the pool and spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the outdoors and could be seen on a sunny day even in the winter, sitting in a lawn chair in the snow without a jacket, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the crisp winter air. Dan also enjoyed animals and briefly raised German Shepard puppies and rabbits. Dan took up the hobby of pigeon flying and was a 10-year member of the Champlain Valley Racers where he received several prizes and awards for races and birds that he raised. Dan also dabbled in old cars with his son Tom and owned a 1962 Chevy Impala that they displayed at local car shows. Dan enjoyed woodworking and loved his old shows like the Honeymooners, Gunsmoke, and Andy Griffith. Dan was also a member of the Richford American Legion since 1966 and was a Service Officer for two years.
Dan's wife Nancy passed away in 1996 after a two-year battle with cancer and Dan retired from General Electric that same year. Dan moved to Berkshire Center in 1997 and during that time he was reacquainted with a close friend from his childhood, Frances M. Audette. Dan and Fran were married in 1999 and enjoyed family, friends, and raising their pets at their home in Berkshire Center. Dan's second wife Fran passed away in 2020 after a cancer diagnosis.
In 2023, Dan sold his home and moved to Swanton to be closer to his son and daughter. Dan liked to help others in his life when they needed it the most. Dan was always there to lend a hand, offer a ride, a place to stay, or a shoulder to lean on during difficult times. Many people in his life are forever grateful for the kindness and support that he offered. Dan enjoyed being closer to his family and could always be seen with his sweet kitty Bionca.
Dan is survived by his children, daughter Tamara Gabel and her husband Tony Gabel of Georgia, VT, their children Nick of Georgia, VT, and Nathan of Portland, ME, his son Thomas Bartlett, his fiancée Robin Wells and her daughter Aubrey Davaney of Swanton, VT, Tom's daughters Amelia and Andrea of Fairfax, VT, his five-month old great-granddaughter Iris Elleanor, and his brother Paul Bartlett of Tallahassee Florida, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
