RICHFORD - Delbert Wayne Combs Sr., age 96, passed away Monday March 19, 2012 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with his family by his side.
He was born December 29, 1915 in South Richford the son of the late Wayne Grover Combs, passed away in 1959 & Olive (Bolt) Combs, passed away in 1927.
Delbert grew up as a dairy farmer and sugar maker in Richford. He was a member of the Richford United Methodist Church and married the love of his life Mildred Sicard in 1935. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking, baseball, boxing, mowing lawns, going to horse pulls and cutting firewood with his son. Delbert sold his farm in 1973 but he continued to work on it until his retirement in 1977. He loved spending time with his family on Sundays and cooking a meal, especially his homemade bread.
He is survived by 6 children; Melvin Combs and his wife Esther of Richford, Ronald Combs of Swanton, Delbert Combs Jr. and his wife Tammy of Richford, Lulah Lavery of Richford, Lorraine Jewett of Naugatuck, CT, Nadene Wetherby and her husband Homer of Sheldon; 18 Grandchildren, including his youngest Tonya Combs of Enosburg; 23 Great Grandchildren; 9 Great Great Grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Alice Combs of Richford, a brother Orville Combs and his wife Mary of Fairfield, a sister Evelyn Rowse of Morrisonville, NY and several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents, Delbert was predeceased by his wife of 38 years Mildred Combs in 1973, a brother Myles in 1965, a sister Marjorie Brown in 2005, an infant sister Marguerite in 1908, his son-in-laws Cedric Lavery in 1989, Garland Jewett in 2000 and Arthur Snider in 1967, a great grandson Travis Mercy in 1999 and his father Dale in 1996, a father-in-law Joseph Sicard in 1974 and a mother-in-law Melvina in 1969.
Funeral services will be held Friday March 23, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Richford United Methodist Church, 86 River Street, Richford 05476 with pastor Jon Bly officiating. Interment will follow in the Richford Center Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main Street, Richford.
