SCOTIA, NY / NO. HERO, VT - Donald C. Egan, age 87, passed away Wednesday December 24, 2008 at Our Lady of the Meadows Community Care Home in Richford.
He was born June 27, 1921 in Schenectady, NY the son of the late, Robert & Agnes (Corrigan) Egan.
Donald was a U. S. Army Veteran from 1942 to 1945 during WWII receiving an honorable discharge with the rank of PFC. Following his discharge from the service he worked as a salesman for McNearneys Distributors in Schenectady, NY. He then became the vice president and eventually president of Thriftway Supermarkets in Scotia & Burnt Hills, NY. Following his years at Thriftway he went back to McNearneys for a brief time and then was an administrative assistant for the Trustco Bank in Schenectady.
Donald was an accomplished drummer and continued to love big band music and jazz through his life. Throughout his life he was known as a welcoming host, successful businessman, storyteller, musician and most of all a dedicated husband and patient, loving father and grandfather. His family and friends will miss him.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Patricia (Stachnik) Egan of Richford, VT. They were married January 13, 1951. He is also survived by a daughter, Carol Egan and her husband, Andrew Fettig of North Hero; his grandchildren, Erin, Thomas, Annie & Isabel; step grandchildren, Drew, Carter & Ruston Fettig; his dear sister-in-law, Elsie Egan of Schenectady, NY; and his nephew who he was godfather to, Bobby Egan & his niece, Katie Egan. Besides his parents Donald was predeceased by his brother, Robert Egan, Jr.
In keeping with Donalds wishes he will be cremated and Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in Schenectady. A memorial service will be held Friday January 2, 2008 at 10:45 AM at Our Lady of the Meadows Community Care Home, 1 Pinnacle Meadows, Richford, VT.
