RICHFORD, VT - Edwin B. Ashton, age 88, passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.
He was born May 20, 1924 on Rice Hill in Franklin, the son of the late Howard and Louise (Barr) Ashton. He married Marilyn (Smith) Ashton on June 7, 1952 and they made their home in Richford.
Ed worked for 36 years at H.K. Webster, retiring in 1984. He was a very active man with many hobbies and interests including cross country skiing, fishing, nature walking and, most of all, canoeing. It was a common sight to see Ed driving his yellow Volkswagen Beetle with his canoe strapped to the top, inviting anyone interested along for a paddle. Later in life Ed enjoyed crafting bird feeders and houses and restoring and caning chairs. He enjoyed visiting and talking with people and especially loved family gatherings. He will be remembered as a kind and sweet man, always ready to give a helping hand to those in need. Ed had served as a member of the Board of the Richford Health Center.
Ed is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ashton of Richford; his son, William Ashton and his wife Joyce of Franklin; 2 daughters, Kelley Ashton of Waterbury and Lesa Ashton of Loveland, CO; 3 grandchildren, Edwin Miller, Wade and Rebecca Ashton; 2 nephews, Darrell Regan and his wife Jenny of Sheldon and Ronald Regan of Washington D.C.; 2 nieces, Eileen Benneig of Sheldon and Darlene Larose and her husband Chris of St. Albans; and several close friends and extended family, especially Terry & Kathy Tatro and their daughters. Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by 4 half-brothers, Myron, Bert, Bernard and John Regan.
In keeping with Eds wishes, there will be a family gathering.
For those who wish, gifts in Eds memory may be made to Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadow, St. Albans, VT 05478.
