SWANTON– Betty J. Patnode, age 91, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.
She was born in Swanton on June 26, 1931 to the late Edward and Blanche (Bean) Gagnon.
Betty grew up in Swanton and graduated from St. Anne’s Academy in 1949. On Feb. 3, 1950 she married Edward Patnode together they purchased a home on Canada Street where they raised their family. She was an active member of her community and The Church of the Nativity in Swanton serving with the Ladies of St. Anne, the Altar Society, and teaching sewing in the 4H program. Betty enjoyed curling up to read a book, completing crossword puzzles, playing 500 and cribbage with her card club, or playing a game of scrabble. She loved embroidery and spent countless hours on the ice rinks in town ice skating. Betty was a born caretaker and even up to her most recent years took pride in looking after some of her fellow residents, she was a true nurturer.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Vaillancourt and her husband Glenn of St. Albans; son, Michael Patnode and his wife Carol of Highgate; granddaughter, Amelia Smith; great grandson, Noah; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husband, Edward Patnode on January 21, 2008.
Betty's family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Our Lady of the Meadows and Franklin County Home Health for the exceptional care she received while in their care.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty's memory may be made to the Stain Glass Windows Church of the Nativity, Restoration of the Catholic Church, 65 Canada St., Swanton, VT 05488.
Family and friends are invited to Betty’s Life Celebration events on Friday, December 2, 2022 to include visitation from 9:30-10:30AM at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT 05488 and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM at The Church of the Nativity, Canada Street, Swanton. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Swanton.
