ENOSBURG FALLS - Elizabeth Ellen Betty Poirier, age 85, passed away at her home with her loving family at her side, Saturday afternoon May 22, 2010.
She was born July 11, 1924 in Franklin the daughter of the late Daniel P. & Marguerite (Lapan) Mackin.
Betty was a resident of Enosburg Falls most of her life, a 1944 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School and the Fanny Allen School of Nursing. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 42 of Enosburg Falls.
Betty worked as a Registered Nurse at the St. Albans Hospital and Kerbs Memorial Hospital for many years. After retiring from hospital nursing, she continued to use her nursing skills, caring for the very ill or dying as a private duty nurse, and visiting the elderly and shut-ins. She also served as a volunteer for the after funeral meals at St. John the Baptist Parish.
Betty loved walking many miles around the village until her illness slowed her down. People who knew her watched out for her when she was out and about, and she very much appreciated their concern. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing BINGO with her friends and always looked forward to her appointments at Hair-A-Rangers where she was treated like a member of their family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh with her jokes and little stories.
She is survived by her sons, David Poirier of Enosburg Falls, James Poirier and his wife Roxanne of St. Albans; her daughters, Kathleen Whitney and her husband Theodore of Bakersfield, and Ann Gratton and her husband Alphonse of Enosburg Falls; 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Shirley Mackin Langmaid of Danby and Anne Mackin of Strattford, CT; a brother -in-law, Edward E. Bourbeau of Manchester, NH; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Richard Poirier on January 10, 2005. Betty & Richard were married October 16, 1948. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Harry, Thomas, Anthony, Robert, Wayne & Richard Mackin (Killed in Korea at age 22), Kathleen Mackin Gilbert, and Mary Mackin Dailey Hendershot (Bettys twin sister).
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Missisquoi St., Enosburg Falls with Rev. Daniel Jordan celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
