Evelyn Stanley

November 7, 1915 — July 19, 2015

ENOSBURG FALLS - Evelyn W. Stanley, age 99, passed away on July 19, 2015 at the Franklin County Health & Rehab Center in St. Albans.

She was born in St. Albans on November 7, 1915 the daughter of the late Lorenzo & Winifred (Campbell) Weed.

Evelyn graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1933 and attended Green Mountain College School of Music. On June 11, 1936 she married Carroll C. Stanley and moved to South Franklin where they owned and operated a Registered Jersey dairy farm until 1966, when they retired to Enosburg Falls. After Carroll passed away in June, 1974, Evelyn continued to live in their home until the age of 98, living independently with the help of her caring neighbors, the Websters, Lussiers and Willeys and the services of Franklin County Home Health and Meals on Wheels.

Evelyn\u0027s family, farm and community were always her first priority. Her talents and interests were many; including leader of the Franklin Merry Girls and Lake Carmi Boys 4-H clubs; womens chair of County Farm Bureau and state director; photojournalist of agricultural, historical and current events in local and national publications; ballroom dancing; Champlain Echoes, a womens barbershop chorus; Enosburg Methodist Church choir; Ladies Village Improvement Society, chairing the award winning Community Improvement Program; Enosburgh Historical Society charter member, chairing the Enosburgh Heritage Center committee; Green Mountain Folklore Society, editing their newsletter, The Potash Kettle, for many years. She wrote a daily illustrated journal of life in a rural, agricultural village from 1976 to 2009, now housed at UVM Bailey-Howe Library Special Manuscripts Dept., to be publicly opened 2076. Her proudest early achievement was being a member of first E.F.H.S. girls varsity basketball team. Evelyn\u0027s homes were noted for the lovely perennial gardens she maintained her entire life and her last years were spent outside as much as possible, wherever she was, enjoying the flowers and birds.
She is survived by her four children: Winona Larose and husband, Richard, of Morrisville; Earl and wife, Susan, of Franklin; Laurel of Danville; Paul and wife, Linda of Bakersfield. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, a niece and several nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Leonard Weed and two sisters, Winona Mason and Elizabeth (Betty) Weed.

The family wishes to thank the superb staffs of both Our Lady of the Meadows and Franklin County Rehab Center for their wonderful care of Evelyn in her final year.
