Gary Rice

SWANTON - Gary Rice, age 80, passed away on Saturday, October 12th, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on August 4th, 1944 to Bruce and Lillian (Nardine) Rice.

Gary grew up on the family farm in Highgate Springs working alongside his father and brother.

Gary graduated from Swanton High School and then went on to the University of Vermont and obtained a bachelor's degree in Business. Gary went on to serve as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army, completing two tours in Vietnam. Upon returning home, Gary started working for the IRS. He started his Property Owner/ Management partnership with his brother Terry soon after. He was a passionate sportsman and outdoorsman, he was known for his love of hunting, fishing, and traveling, as well as his occasional trips to the casino.

In addition to his military service, Gary Rice was a proud member of VFW Post #778 in Swanton, The Elks Lodge in St. Albans and the American Legion, as well as a devoted attendee of the "Little White Church". His lively spirit and adventurous nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Gary is survived by his wife, Debra Rice; son, Scott Benoit; siblings, Terry Rice and his wife Juliette, and Karen Conger and her husband Colin; brother-in-law, Royce Hemingway and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Lillian Rice; sister-in-law, Carol Martin and her husband Charlie; brother-in-law, Russell Hemingway.

Family and friends will be invited to Gary's life celebration to include visitation on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024 from 12-2:00PM with a funeral service following at 2:00PM at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT 05488. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

A special thank you to the staff at Franklin County Rehab for the care they gave Gary, as well as Bayada Hospice who made it possible for Gary to be at home during his final days.
