ENOSBURG FALLS– George H. Morton, age 84, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Born in Burlington, Vermont on March 5, 1938, he was the son of the late Eugene H. Morton and Florence L. (Moody) Morton. George was a 1956 graduate of Burlington High School and joined the U.S. Navy after graduating. He married Elsie “Ellie” Porter on October 2, 1976, at the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion in Port Hueneme, CA. They traveled extensively throughout his 20-year career to numerous duty stations in the United States, as well as, a tour in Australia. After George’s retirement from the Navy, he proceeded to work in law enforcement; working for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Northwest State Correctional Facility, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. George took great pride in being an American who served his country. He was patriotic, never without his ‘retired Navy’ hat. He looked forward to Seabee gatherings and kept in touch with fellow retirees. He had a large circle of life-long friends due to his unmatched ability to make friends wherever he went. Every Friday you could find him having lunch with his closest friends at Maple City Diner. George loved to discuss politics, current events and stories about his years traveling with the Navy and ICE. He had a love for dogs, especially beagles. George is survived by his three grandchildren, Damien Barnes and his wife Sara of Rutland, Sharlotte Williams of Hyde Park and Donald Barnes and his wife Nicole of St. Albans; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; close Friends Bob & Debbie Berger, and Kerry & Sharon Kirkpatrick; and longtime neighbors who he considered family, Richard & Sarah Tougas. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Ellie Morton; daughter, Carla Barnes; and a special cousin, Frances St. Amour, Jr. Family and friends are invited to George’s Life Celebration to include a memorial service with military honors on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 11:00AM at the Goss-Spears Life Celebration Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls, VT 05450.
