Gertrude Swoyer

ST. ALBANS - Gertrude "Trudy" Swoyer, age 89, passed away Monday evening Feb.15, 2016 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington.
She was born in Zurich, Switzerland on April 1, 1926, the daughter of Werner and Pauline (Unrath) Holzgang.
With her family,Trudy immigrated to Canada in 1938, coming across the Atlantic on the "Bremen", a German cruise ship making its last voyage before becoming a troop carrier in WWII. Upon completing her education, Trudy moved to Montreal. After working at the Dominion Bank, she became employed by Colonial Air Lines, where she met her husband, Robert "Bob". After a whirlwind courtship, they married on Jan. 17, 1947 and honeymooned in the Laurentians skiing. Initially, they settled on Long Island to start their family, before moving back to Quebec for a few years to be close to Trudy\u0027s family, then moved to Vermont where they resided for the rest of their lives.
She worked briefly at Alexanders Drug Store and Grand Union, before working at Fonda Container for over twenty years, retiring in 1987 due to ill health. She bravely fought and beat stage IV ovarian cancer, she was an incredibly strong and determined woman.
She, along with her husband, were longtime members of the St. Albans farmers market. Trudy was an accomplished gardener, knitter, and cook. She took great pleasure in sharing her skills with family and friends. Both at Fonda and the farmer\u0027s market, she made many lasting friendships.
She will be greatly missed by her family. Trudy is survived by her children, Roberta Rocheleau of Spring Hill, Florida, Pauline Loiselle and husband Paul of Enosburg Falls, Harry Swoyer and wife Joyce of Highgate Springs; her grandchildren, Robert Swoyer and wife Casey, Christina Chase and husband Alexander, Michelle Douglas and husband Brian, Michael Loiselle and wife Jennifer, Justin Rocheleau and partner Courtney Hayes; her great-grandchildren, Olivia and Mason Chase, Andrew Douglas, Hannah and Devin Loiselle.
Besides her parents, Trudy was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her grandson, Timothy, her brother, Werner Holzgang, and his wife, Doris.
In keeping with Trudy\u0027s wishes, there will be no services or calling hours. Her family will have a celebration of her life in July.
