Gordon Mayhew

RICHFORD - Gordon Israel Mayhew, age 86, husband of Anita (Larose) Mayhew, passed away Thursday February 16, 2012 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with his family at his side.

He was born October 25, 1925 in Montgomery the son of the late Israel & Olive (Donna) Mayhew.

Gordon was a resident of Richford most of his life and a former resident of Montgomery. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the American Legion Post # 12 of Richford. He was also a former member of the Richford Lions Club and the Richford Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors and was the former Club Champion.

Gordons working career started at Jutras Dry Cleaners for 10 years prior to working at Sweat-Comings retiring in 1987. Along with his wife Anita, they owned and operated Mayhews General Store in Montgomery for 10 years and then Mayhews Dept. Store in Richford from 1972 to 1978. He then went into partnership with his son Jim operating Mayhews Corner Store in Richford from 1981 to 1987 which Jim still runs today. Following his retirement Gordon enjoyed spending his winters in Florida.

Gordon was an avid golfer, excelled in playing darts and enjoyed snowmobiling. He also enjoyed his camp and boating at Lake Carmi.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Mayhew of Richford. Gordon and Anita were married May 27, 1950. He is also survived by his children, James Mayhew and his wife Paula of Richford, and Jean Begnoche and her partner, Tom Michel of St. Albans; grandchildren, Tisa Begnoche, Alan Mayhew & Abby Mayhew; great grandchildren, Tyler Mayhew & Parker Lemery; his brother, Carmen Mayhew of Richford; sister, Delma Guyette and her husband Leon of Orlando, FL; his brothers and sisters in law, Henry & Velma Larose of Leominster, MA, Joseph & Marie Larose of Derby Line, Rosaire & Sharon Larose of Enosburg Falls, Irene Larose of Richford and Rita Larose of Richford; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by infant twin sons, Alan & Frank; and a brother, Harlan Mayhew.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 20, 2012 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 152 Main Street, Richford with Rev. Karl Hahr celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 4-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
