DERBY, CT / ENOSBURG FALLS, VT - Hugh P. Pat McFarland, age 74, previously of Enosburg Falls, VT, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 10 year battle with esophageal cancer.
He was born September 13, 1934 in West Burke, VT the youngest son of the late Raymond J. & Margaret C. (Bushaw) McFarland of Enosburg Falls. He graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1953, where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball with school teams. He also played for the Enosburg Legion baseball team.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps with time served during the Korean conflict as a Special Weapons Instructor, and later in the Military Police. He was honorably discharged in 1956.
In 1958, Hugh moved to Connecticut where he met and married his wife of 45 years, the former Marian Smith of Milford, CT. He was employed at Carpenter Technology Corporation, Bridgeport, CT, retiring in 1988 after 28 years of service.
Besides his devoted wife, Marian, he is survived by his loving son, Terry P. McFarland of Ansonia, CT; his loving daughter Lorrie Ann, and son-in-law, Michael Driscoll of Seymour, CT; two wonderful loving grandsons, Colin & Ryan Driscoll of Seymour, CT. In addition, he leaves two sisters and their husbands, Pauline & Robert Beede of Mesa, AZ, and Hughlene & Paul Plouff of Sheldon, VT; one brother and his wife, Arthur Bill & Connie McFarland of Montgomery Center, VT; He is further survived by sisters-in-law, Eleanor Pugh of Milford, CT, Jean Smith and her husband Thomas Check of Vero Beach, FL, & Karen Jennings of Beacon Falls, CT; a brother-in-law, Clayton Smith of Milford, CT; many nieces and nephews and their families.
In keeping with Pats wishes he will be buried next to his parents at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Enosburg Falls, VT on Saturday December 27, 2008 at 12:30 PM.
Visiting hours will be held at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls, VT on Saturday from 10 am -12 pm.
