BAKERSFIELD, VT / SOLDOTNA, AK - James Gordon Jim Montague, age 76, passed away Tuesday April 17, 2012 in Cottonwood, AZ surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 24, 1935 in Bakersfield, VT the son of the late Rupert & Audrey (Young) Montague.

Jim grew up on a small farm in Bakersfield where he developed his love for the outdoors. After graduating from Brigham Academy in 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for 5 years, before transferring to the U.S. Air Force. Throughout Jims military career he was stationed in many different parts of the country and Vietnam, but he belonged in Alaska. After 21 years of military service Jim chose to make Alaska his home and retired there in 1974.

Civilian life took on several forms for Jim including working on the new Alaskan Oil Pipeline, the Ft. Richardson Commissary, modeling for Alaska International Air, a realtor and a campground host at Anchor Point.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Jim enjoyed spending time with family and friends; especially while fishing along the Kenai Peninsula and hunting in Alaska, Maine and Vermont. He will be remembered for his incredible passion for Alaska and his love for story and joke telling.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Chris Montague; their children, David Montague and his wife Marni of Flagstaff, AZ, Donna Cahalane and her husband Ted, Jill Montague and Jeffrey Montague and his wife Melissa all of Anchorage, AK; their grandchildren, Whitney Montague, Erin, Katie and Amy Cahalane, Brandon and Amanda Zarzoza; his siblings, Penny Goss, Garry Montague and his wife Virginia and Linda McCall all of Bakersfield, VT; his brother-in-law, Bill Johnson of Chambly, QC and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson; his brother-in-law, Jack Goss Sr.; and his son-in-law, Raul Rudy Zarzoza.

A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of Jims family in Alaska.
