EAST FAIRFIELD - Johanna L. Lumbra, age 73, passed away at her home with her loving family at her side, Sunday morning December 4, 2011 following a long valiant struggle with cancer.
She was born February 27, 1938 in St. Albans the daughter of the late Floyd & Maxine (Depatie) Lumnah.
Jo was a 1956 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. Shortly after graduating she married Lynford Lumbra on September 12, 1956. In 1969 Jo & Lynford purchased what would be Lyns Market in East Fairfield and operated it until their retirement on August 18, 1999. Jo & Lyn purchased the store from Lyns father Hardy, whom had purchased the store in 1949.
Jo was a faithful member of St. Anthony / St. Georges Catholic Church in East Fairfield and belonged to the St. Anthony Holy Rosary Society. She was also a member of the East Fairfield Fire Dept. Auxiliary, East Fairfield Social Concerns Committee, and the St. Anthony/St. George Lawn Party Committee.
Jo enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren, sewing projects, making personalized Christmas tree ornaments, playing cribbage, gardening, knitting, baking, reading, going to their camp and attending her grandchildrens functions. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family. She was also very committed to fundraising events for various non-profit organizations, especially the American Cancer Society in honor of her sister, Elenor and most recently the Lamoille Area Cancer Network.
Jos family wishes to give a special thank you for the wonderful care she received from Dr. Marc Greenblatt, Jean Fay, Janet Ely, the nurses in the chemo unit and the nurses in Shep 4. We will forever be grateful for the wonderful care she received, allowing her another 2 + years to be with us.
She is survived by her husband, Lynford Lumbra of East Fairfield; her children and their spouses, Colleen & Arthur Sauve of Milton, Chris & Nancy Lumbra of Essex Jct., Craig & Joan Lumbra of East Fairfield, Carrie & Peter Chlumecky of Hinesburg, and Cory & Tammie Lumbra of Vergennes; her grandchildren, Chad Sauve, Casie Adams and her husband Zack, Cayla Sauve, Kyle, Johannah & Lauren Lumbra, Callie & Celsey Lumbra, Nicholas, Lynn & Max Chlumecky, Phillip & Taylor Pidgeon, and Reid & Ross Lumbra; brothers-in-law, Richard Colburn of St. Albans and Ray Morris of Florida ; several nieces and nephews. Jo was predeceased by her mother, Maxine (Depatie) Newell; her father, Floyd Lumnah; and sisters, Elenor Colburn & Jacqueline Morris.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 9, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Patricks Catholic Church, 116 Church Road, Fairfield with Rev. Leonodas Laroche celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in St. Isidores Cemetery in Montgomery Center.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
