RICHFORD - John Chalifoux, age 74, passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.
He was born on November 2, 1942 in Abercorn, Quebec to the late Andre & Celina (Couture) Chalifoux.
John grew up in Franklin and graduated from Franklin High School. After high school, he worked at a few local farms and later joined the Army National Guard. John worked as a truck driver for most of his life. He hauled for McDermotts Trucking and later started his own business called John Chalifoux Trucking. While hauling milk down to Boston he met the love of his life, Sue Klatka. Sue worked at the toll booth that John would frequently drive through and he asked her out on a date. On the third date John knew Sue was his soulmate and he asked her to marry him. John and Sue were married on October 15, 1977. In 1985 John retired from the National Guard as a Sgt. 1st Class after 21 years of service. He retired from truck driving in 2011.
After retirement John and Sue enjoyed traveling the country together, their favorite place was Hawaii. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working on home projects and gardening. John looked forward to his morning walks, especially with his sister Claire. He was a long-time member of the Richford American Legion Post #12 and the Knights of Columbus. John was proud to be a 4th degree Knight and he was chosen for Vermont Knight of the year in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Chalifoux of Richford; their sons, Stephen Chalifoux and his wife Jennifer L. of St. Albans and Jonathan Chalifoux and his wife Jennifer R. of Bakersfield; 2 grandchildren, Alexa and Brayden; siblings, Claire Fay and her significant other Charlie Hotchkin of Richford, Cecile Fuller and her husband Leonard of North Ft. Myers, FL, Robert Chalifoux and his wife Carol of Vergennes, Real Chalifoux and his wife Darlene of Richford and Richard Chalifoux of Enosburg Falls; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Klatka and his wife Susan of Springfield, MA and several nieces & nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Andre & Celina Chalifoux.
Visitation will be Friday, August 18, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, Main St., Richford with Fr. Karl Hahr officiating.
