RICHFORD - Leon Oscar Gendron, age 68, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday December 25, 2011 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born May 20, 1943 in South Richford the son of the late Patrick & Lila (Lagro) Gendron.
Leon grew up in Richford. He entered the U.S. Air Force for a very brief period and then went to work as a logger in Maine at the Katahdin Iron Works region where he met his first wife and mother to his children, Clara Pelkey. After moving back to Vermont, Leon worked for Lyndon McAllister on a crane drag line boom truck. He then started his own logging business which he operated from 1968 - 1988 at which point he drove log truck for John Chamberlain. He then became the head cook at the Dairy Center Restaurant before opening Leons Diner in Enosburg Falls which he operated for approximately 10 years before selling in 2009.
He was a Past Master and Current Master of the Missisquoi Lodge # 9 F&AM and a 32nd degree Mason of the York Rite, the Shrine Mt. Sinai Temple and rode with the Shrine Motorcycle Corps. He enjoyed snowmobiling, Fly Fishing, Hunting, Playing cards with his family. He will be remembered as an all-around jokester. Most of all he loved to gamble and make frequent trips to the casinos. He lived his life in the same way he gambled, always giving more than he received. For everyone that knew him he was a kindhearted friend and shared with everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Place) Gendron and her children Reeve & Thane Asselin of Winooski; his children, Debbie Lussier her husband Terry and their daughter Cayla of Redmond, OR, Jan Gendron of Colchester, and Sunday Gendron her partner Joe Arnold and her son Wyatt Baker of Grand Isle; his siblings, Estelle & Camille Girard of Richford, Jean & Sam White of Grand Isle, Roger Gendron of Richford, Sally & Phil Pelkey of Berkshire, and James Gendron and his wife Tammy of Richford; several nieces and nephews; a former wife, Catherine Haire of Richford and her daughter, Melissa. Besides his parents, Leon was predeceased by 2 brothers, Larry & Samuel Gendron; and a sister, Margaret Gendron.
Funeral services will be held Saturday December 31, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Rev. Roger Charbonneau officiating.
Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.
