HIGHGATE – Lora “Betty” Sartwell, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Sheldon, Vermont on August 26, 1934. Betty was raised by James and Grace Locke in Highgate, Vermont. Betty graduated from High School as Valedictorian.
She married Stewart Glenn Sartwell in 1952, and then bought a farm in Franklin in 1964. They had six boys who completed their family. Betty became widowed in 1969, in 1971 they moved to Highgate off the farm. Betty held many jobs through her life including a clothing retail clerk, Tupperware Dealer, working at the Children’s store in St. Albans, as well as a cashier at South Main Grocery in St. Albans.
Later in life, Betty met Bill Gaylor from Granby, Quebec. Together they enjoyed dancing, spending time at the cottage in Bromont, Canada, selling their crafts at Flea markets in Vermont and Canada. Her favorite pastime was Bingo with her special friends the “Three Betty’s”.
Betty is survived by her boys, James Sartwell and his fiancé Karen Moore, Rodney Sartwell, Michael Sartwell and friend Candy Hope, Roger Sartwell, Larry Sartwell, and Brian Sartwell and his wife Kari; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her parents, James and Grace Locke, husband, Stewart Sartwell, friend, Bill Gaylor, and grandson, Chad Sartwell.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Laura Garceau, who was a longtime caregiver and friend. Also a special thank you to Agewell and Hospice.
Family and friends will be invited to Betty’s life celebration to include, a visitation on Monday, November 25th, 2024 from 4-7:00PM. A memorial service will follow at 7:00PM at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT 05488. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Franklin on Tuesday, November 26th, 2024 at 11:00AM.
