FRANKLIN - Madeline Barbara Messier, age 94, widow of Thomas C. Messier, passed away Tuesday evening, March 15, 2011 shortly after receiving the anointing of the sick at the St. Albans Health Care Facility with her daughter-in-law by her side.
She was born September 8, 1916 in Berkshire the daughter of the late Wilbur & Winifred (Jones) Towle.
Madeline raised her family in Franklin and in 1979 moved to Florida and maintained her residence there until she moved back to the Carriage House in Franklin in 2008. She worked as the Hot Lunch Agent at the Franklin Elementary/High School and then was a waitress at Dairyland Restaurant in Sheldon. She finally worked several years at Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans in the hospitality shop, retiring in 1979.
Madeline enjoyed working in her gardens especially growing Gladiolas. Some of her many enjoyments were knitting, crocheting, berrying, word searches and playing cards. Her family will remember her wonderful baking, making Christmas candy, taffy, popcorn balls and sugar-on-snow. Her grandchildren will always have the memories of riding around the back roads with their grandparents on the week-ends and their frequent stops for creamies. Madeline also loved animals especially her cats and dogs. She spent countless hours watching the chipmunks outside her window at the Carriage House.
She is survived by her sons, James Messier and his wife Ronna of Franklin, Gary Messier of Lakeland, FL and Timothy Messier of Apopka, FL; her daughter, Judy Messier of Deltona, FL; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; her sister, Iris Plouff of St. Albans; several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, Madeline was predeceased by 3 grandsons, David, Michael & Daniel Boone Messier; her daughter-in-law, Sylvia Messier; and her brother, Harry Towle.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Franklin United Church, 5374 Main Street, Franklin with Rev. Jason McConnell officiating. Private interment will follow in the St. Marys Cemetery in Franklin.
A time of visitation will be held at the church on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the hour of the funeral.
