BROCTON, MA / WEST BERKSHIRE, VT - Martha Grundman Stoney, age 92, passed away Wednesday April 7, 2010 at the Franklin County Rehab Center in St. Albans.
She was born June 5, 1917 in Boston, MA the daughter of the late John & Otillia (Klesterof) Grundman.
She graduated from Ashland High School, Ashland, MA class of 1935. She was also a graduate of Fisher Junior College. For 13 years Martha was the personal secretary of Dr. Woods, the director of McLean Hospital in Waverly, MA.
Martha married Stewart R. Stoney on November 26, 1949 in Watertown, MA. He preceded her on November 25, 2006, three hours before their 57th wedding anniversary. Shortly after Sewarts passing, Martha moved to Vermont making her home with her daughter and her family.
Martha had a passion for color paper, fabric, and glue. She was the happiest when she was in the middle of a project. Marthas talents were from the simplest arts and crafts to gold leaf design, millinery fashion, using her mothers wringer washer to make Christmas cards, and most forms of sewing. A 1970s evening course at Brockton High lead to 40 years of the Flower Friends . While living in Vermont she attended Care Partners where she continued her love of crafts.
She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Brockton Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and a life member of Alpha Iota Sorority.
Martha is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol & Vincent Hickey of West Berkshire; her grandchildren, Jonathan, Allison and Lauren Hickey; a sister-in-law, J. May Stoney of North Hampton, NH; a niece and several nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Walea Cepurneek.
A memorial service will be held Sunday April 18, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Richford United Methodist Church, River St., Richford, VT with Rev. Heidi Reinker officiating.
A celebration of Marthas life to be held at the Central United Methodist Church, 65 West Elm St., Brockton, MA on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 1:00 PM.
