ENOSBURG FALLS - Martha Glenn Tillotson, age 85, passed away Friday evening July 18, 2008 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born February 22, 1923 in Knoxville, Iowa the daughter of the late Claude A. & Ella Glenn (Gaylord) Phelps.
Martha served in the US Navy Waves during WWII receiving her honorable discharge with the rank of SK2c. She was a 1953 graduate of the University of Vermont receiving her BS in Education. She taught math at Enosburg Falls High School for 30 years retiring in 1985. She was a devoted teacher, taking whatever time was needed to help her students succeed.
She was a member of the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma (Zeta Chapter), National Education Association, Vermont Retired Teachers Association, and the Franklin/Lamoille Retired Teachers Association.
She enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of the Enosburg Falls Country Club where she was a multiple time ladies club champion. She also enjoyed knitting reading and working in her flower gardens.
She is survived by her husband Wendell E. Barney Tillotson of Enosburg Falls. They were married August 25, 1944. She is also survived by her son, Lee Tillotson and his wife Susan of Bakersfield; 2 daughters, Janet Machia and her husband Bernard of Bakersfield, and Kathy Bokori and her husband Tom of Scottsville, KY; 5 grandchildren, Leif Tillotson and his fianc, Amy Gary, Courtney Tillotson his wife Sara and their children, Jarrett & Avery, Jeremy Tillotson his companion Emily Garceau and their daughter Ruby, Shaun Machia his wife Angela and their children Marisa & Rowen, and Jackie Daviau her husband Steve and their son Isaac; 2 sisters, Elizabeth Beard of Houston, TX, and Arlene Nichol of Carthage, IL; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter Claudia Tillotson; a granddaughter, Megan Fitzgerald; a brother, Claude A. Phelps Jr.; and sisters, Clara Swayze & Roxa Dill.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday July 22, 2008 from 6-8 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
Memorial services and interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family with interment being held at the Tillotson family lot in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield.
