Enosburg Falls-Miles Knowlton Symons of Enosburg Falls, age 88, passed away Tuesday evening June 5, 2007 surrounded by his family at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
Miles was born in Bakersfield on March 12, 1919 the son of the late George F. & Annie (Knowlton) Symons. He attended Bakersfield schools, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, worked for H.P. Hoods Inc. and the Central Vermont Railroad. Miles was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 21, 1942. He served in North Africa and Italy for 28 months, with the Medical Corps as a Surgical Technician and Medical-Aidman attached to the U.S. 5th Army in the Naples-Foggia and Rome-Arno-Campaigns. Miles was honorably discharged December 11, 1945, with the European African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbons with two Bronze Stars, and other medals. After Miles discharge he went to work for the F.A. Tucker Inc. of Rutland as an Electrical Lineman.
On June 29, 1946 Miles married Ella E. Brosseau of Johnson. Miles worked for the Vermont Electric Cooperative of Johnson for many years as an electrical lineman and electrician.
In 1955 Miles & Ella bought a dairy farm in Enosburgh, which they operated with their family until May 1977, then went into the poultry business until 1984.
Miles was active in community affairs serving for many years as Tax Collector for the town, school and village. He also served as Constable, Truant Officer, Board of Civil Authority, Justice of the Peace and also other offices and committees. Miles received the Vermont Public Service Award from the Secretary of State Office for his years of community service. Miles was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls and a Life Member of the American Legion Post 42 in Enosburg Falls. He has been a member of the Legion for over 55 years.
Miles was predeceased by a son Gary in 1956 and his wife Ella in 1988 after 42 years of marriage. Miles was the younger of eleven children, all are predeceased; four brothers and six sisters; Lyman, Mary, Estella, William, Harry, George, Ruth, Blanche, Doris and Thelma.
Miles is survived by two children Mary Sylvester and her husband Leonard of Enosburgh; Darlene Symons and companion, Dennis Ryan of Fairfield; two grand-sons, Peter Sylvester and wife Anne of Ellenburg Ctr, NY ; Brian and wife Rebecca of Waterford, ME; four great-grand children; Nathan, Matthew, Olivia and Lydia Sylvester, a brother-in-law and sister-in-laws and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Benedict Kiely celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave. Enosburg Falls.
