Paul Plouff

SHELDON - Paul E. Plouff, age 86, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans with his family at his side.

He was born, May 9, 1929 in Enosburgh, the son of the late Amedee & Oliva (Jutras) Plouff.

Paul attended school in Enosburg and graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1947 and on June 28, 1948 he married Hughlene Dena P. (McFarland) Plouff. Paul worked at Worthmore Grain Co. as a truck driver in Enosburg for a few years, then because he could speak French and was able to communicate with the French families in the area, he moved to Blouin Brothers Oil as a truck driver. From there, Paul worked at the Sheldon Pulp Mill for several years then started his own professional carpentry business. He specialized in remodeling kitchens and bathrooms and built several houses from the ground up for family members. In 1967 Paul bought the Haynes Monument Co. and renamed it Plouffs Monument Co. In 1973 he formed a partnership with his son and fully retired in 1988.

Paul was a man who enjoyed being busy. In addition to working full time and having a young family, he refereed basketball games at night and umpired baseball games around the northern part of the state. His love of sports was a lifelong enjoyment. In high school Paul played basketball, baseball and football then he went on to play baseball in the Eastern Border League. Paul coached the Enosburg Little League Baseball Team and later in life he coached the Enosburg Falls High School Girls J.V. and Varsity Basketball Teams. Paul also coached the Boys J.V. and Varsity Baseball Teams and then went on to coach the Varsity Golf Team. He enjoyed the success of teaching young adults how to collaborate, how to become leaders and how to become the best individuals they could be. Paul absolutely loved working with the athletes he coached and he took his coaching positions very seriously assuming the role of mentor to many young adults. Paul built some strong bonds with the young people he coached and their families and he created lasting memories that carried him through the years.

After retirement in 1988, Paul drove school bus for a few years, umpired baseball and softball games, continued coaching and enjoyed many days on the golf course in Enosburg. As he learned more about the Country Clubs needs, Paul became an integral part of the management team and the committee that expanded the Enosburg Country Club from a 9 hole course to an 18 hole course. In his spare time, Paul loved to spend time with his family and friends watching Red Sox Baseball games, playing golf, going hunting in Maine and going ice fishing.

Paul will be remembered by many people as a kind, caring and loving man who was creative, talented and funny. He was always telling stories and making jokes and his charismatic personality drew people in quickly. Pauls character and integrity combined with his patience and understanding were gifts that he used right up until the day he died. He made many friends at Redstone Villa through his jokes and stories and his new found love of music. Pauls family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Redstone Villa for the loving and compassionate care provided to him during his illness.

He is survived by his wife, Hughlene Dena Plouff of Sheldon; his children, Jean Plouff of St. Albans, Steven Plouff and his wife Sharon of Franklin, and Nancy Riley and her husband Glenn of Enosburgh; his grandchildren, Angie Cook and her husband Bob, Heather Lovelette and her husband Brad, Christopher Riley and his wife Kayleigh, Corey Riley, & Colton Riley; his great grandchildren, Kamden & MaKenna Lovelette, Abigail Riley, Paige Lytch and her husband, Tajon and his great great grandchild Xavier Cook; his sister, Mary Jane Gauthier of Jonesville; his brother, Homer Plouff of Delray Beach, FL; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Paul was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ann Breault; and his brothers, Loren, Romeo, Armand, Rosaire & Lucien Plouff.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14th at 1:00 pm at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 13th from 5-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
