SWANTON - Phyllis J. Hurlbut, age 77, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday morning April 20, 2010 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born August 3, 1932 in Sutton, Quebec the daughter of the late William E. & Edith A. (Benson) Poirier.
Phyllis was raised in Sutton and had worked in the yarn mill there as a young girl. She married William D. Hurlbut on January 27, 1953. He predeceased her on September 3, 1986. She had made her home at the Ave Maria Community Care Home in Richford since February and prior to that she made her home with her daughter in Swanton for 8 years.
Phyllis was a housewife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening and freezing the vegetables she grew, going to yard sales, listening to country music especially Merle Haggard, and most of all she loved the time she spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by; her daughters, Janette Hoague of Swanton, Collen Mills and her lifelong companion Bill Russell of Enosburg Falls, and Billie Harrness and her fianc Kirt Westcom of East Fairfield; her grandchildren, Shane, Raven, Jamie, Tasney, Tiffany, Brittany, Randi, Ricky Jr., and Brooke; 7 great grandchildren; her siblings, Lenora Murray of Quebec, Marlene Johnson and her husband Richard of Connecticut, Bobby Poirier and his wife Anne of Ontario, and Billy Poirier and his partner Liz of Quebec; several nieces and nephews; and her cat & best friend, Buddy. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Skyler Hoague on August 25, 2002.
A memorial service will be held Thursday April 22, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main Street, Richford. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Fairmont Cemetery in Sutton, Quebec.
A time of visitation will be held at the Spears Funeral Home in Richford on Thursday from 6:00 PM until the hour of the memorial service.
