He was the son of Gen. Merle H. Davis and Edith Gates Davis of Franklin, Vermont. Born October 27, 1920, he was brought up an Army Brat with his sisters, Mary Beth and Anne. Dick studied engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY where he rowed on a crew that became the Eastern Sprint Champions in 1940. He graduated with distinction and was also an Honor Graduate of the ROTC program. On October 27, 1941 he received a regular Army commission in the Corps of Engineers.

After five years of service during WWII, including two years as a Combat Engineer in the European Theater he resigned as a Lt. Col. and enrolled in The Harvard Business School where he was honored to be a Baker Scholar, and coached the intramural rowing program at Harvard College.

Dicks business career began at Pepperidge Farm, where he met and married Elizabeth H. Cadwell, who supported him in all his business endeavors. They had two children, Cindy and Ricky (who died in 1978). Their marriage ended after 52 years, with Bettys death in 2003. Dick spent thirty years as a General Manager of small manufacturing companies in the food, chemical and plastic industries with job titles ranging from Division Manager to President.

After retirement he moved to Green Valley, Arizona, but spent summers in Franklin, Vermont where he was Chairman of the Franklin Electric Light Co. and for 28 years an officer or a director of the Lake Carmi Campers Association.

Dicks second life started in 2007 with his marriage to Lee Kaiken. They moved to La Posada in Green Valley and spent summers on Lake Carmi in Vermont.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lee and her family; his sisters, Mary Beth Bloomer of Rutland and Anne Greenlee of Colorado Springs, CO; his daughter, Cynthia Hicks of Springtown, TX; grandchildren, Christina Hicks Lano of Chaska, MN and Robert Hicks of Chicago, IL and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

As he wished, Dick will be buried beside Betty and Ricky in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Middle Road, Franklin, Vermont at a graveside service to be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 10, 2011.
