Robert H. Burnell Sr., lovingly known as "Bob", passed away on January 5, 2025, in St. Albans, Vermont, at the age of 90, with his devoted wife of 70 years, Jean Caderect-Burnell, by his side.
Born on May 26th, 1934, in Richmond, Vermont. Bob was the eldest son of eight children. From an early age, he demonstrated remarkable determination and fortitude, beginning work at just 13 years old to help support his family. He recognized the importance of education to provide his own family with a better life. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Bob utilized the GI Bill to graduate from the University of Vermont while working two jobs and raising a young family. He later earned a Master's in commercial lending from Rutgers University.
Bob's professional career flourished at the Chittenden Trust Company, where he rose to the position of Senior Vice President in charge of lending. A self-made man, he retired early and spent his retirement traveling across the United States with Jean before settling in Deland, Florida, for over 16 years. Eventually, they returned to Vermont to be closer to family.
In 2014, Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and faced numerous medical challenges in his later years. Despite these obstacles-including breaking both hips, enduring multiple dislocations, and a fractured arm, he displayed extraordinary perseverance and strength, fighting tirelessly to return home after a year and a half in skilled nursing care. Against all odds, he did just that, his enduring love for Jean driving him on.
Above all else, Bob cherished time with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Caderect-Burnell; son Robert H. Burnell Jr. and partner Vicki Morin; daughter Kathleen Burnell-Brown, her partner Christopher Hamilton; grandchildren Robert H. Burnell III, his fiancé, Jennifer Stamm; Nicole Burnell, her husband Benjamin Nicolas; Samantha Burnell, her fiancé Patrick Branon, Alex Burnell his fiancé Kathleen Hall, Kyle Brown his wife Jennifer Brown; Casey Brown; and eight great-grandchildren.
Bob enjoyed golf, shuffleboard, hunting and fishing with the gang in Roxbury, and playing cards. He embraced life with joy and a steadfast devotion to those he loved. His legacy of love, resilience, and dedication will forever inspire those who knew him.
May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate to share in his life.
