SHELDON SPRINGS - Robert C. Gale, age 93, passed away early Sunday morning, March 28, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in St. Albans on March 28, 1917, to John A. & Gertrude (McBride) Gale.
He led a long and active life, enjoying the outdoors through hunting, fishing, skiing, golfing and snowmobiling and owned a camp on Lake Carmi where he spent many summers with his family.
He was a life-long resident of Sheldon, a member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church and was employed at the paper mill located in Sheldon Springs for 50 years, retiring in 1985. Following his retirement he enjoyed a daily game of golf in the summer and frequent snowmobile rides in the winter, enjoying his last ride earlier this month. He also spent time traveling with his wife and family.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and was assigned to the field artillery during World War II, stationed in Africa and Europe. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 88 of Sheldon.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Theresa (Kane) Gale of Sheldon Springs; his four children and their families, Deborah Kelly of Georgia and her son, James; John Gale his wife RayLee of Wauseon, OH and their children, Craig Borin his wife Danielle and their daughter Hailey, Miranda and her son Nehemiah, John R. and Jenna; Norman Gale of Sheldon; Barbara Gatti her husband James of Waterbury Center and their children, Michael his wife Olivia and their daughters Beatrice and Josephine, and Gemma Gatti and her fianc Rick Phillips. He is also survived by his brother, John Douglas Gale of Sheldon; his sister, Marguerite Horton of Newport; his brother-in-law, Norman Kane and his wife Peggy of Sheldon; his sister-in-law, Claire Kane of Sheldon; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Theresa (Ferland) Gale; and brothers-in-law, Frank Horton and Donald Kane.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Sheldon Springs with Rev. Bernard Bechard celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in St. Anthonys Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 3-6 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
