RICHFORD - Ronald West, age 86, passed away peacefully Saturday morning January 28, 2012 surrounded by his loving family at the St. Albans Health & Rehab facility.
He was born August 30, 1925 in Sheldon the son of the late Charles & Alberta (Sheltra) West.
Ronald enjoyed hunting and fishing as a young man but his one passion was fiddling. He was an accomplished self-taught fiddler and began playing at the age of 13. Throughout his playing career Ron won several competitions including the Northeast Regional in 1968 and 1969, Craftsbury Common in 1974, Stark, New Hampshire in 1975, and the Traditional New England Fiddlers Contest held in Hartford, CT in 1976. Ron was also invited to Weiser, Idaho for National competitions, once as a competitor and once as a judge. He was a member of the Northeast Fiddlers Association since 1967, serving several positions as a director. Rons fiddling has also been featured in the Smithsonian, and his legacy will live on through his music.
He is survived by his children; Ronald West of Richford, Thomas West and his wife Gail of Richford, Larry West and his wife Jeannie of Enosburg, Jay West of St. Albans, David West of Richford, Christopher West and his wife Belinda of Hahira, GA and Linda West of St. Albans; His Grandchildren, Matthew West of St. Albans, Ronald West Jr. of Chicago, IL, Rebecca Corbiere and her husband Tom of Georgia, Jamie West and his wife Jennifer of Newport, Jessica Eagles and her husband Duane of Enosburg, Joshua West of Boston, MA, Lucas West of Enosburg and Jordan West of Winooski; his Great Grandchildren, Benjamin and Leah West of Newport and Bradyn Eagles of Enosburg; his 2 sisters; Beverly Little of Toronto, ONT, and Doris Farrar of Plymouth, CT; his sisters-in-law, Geraldine Toot DAgostino and Eunice Hogan; his brothers-in-law, Raymond Hunter and Raymond Parent and his wife Charlotte, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ronald was predeceased by his wife, Betty (Farrar) West; his son, Robert West; his sisters, Shirley Tremblay, Lorraine Delaire, Norma Mayhew & Juanita Hunter; and his brothers, Charles West and Lynwood Chick West.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 152 Main St., Richford with Rev. Karl Hahr celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will be held this spring in the Richford Center Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
