Russell Dodd

August 18, 1927 — November 3, 2011

SHELDON - Russell H. Dodd, age 84, husband of Eleanor (James) Dodd, passed away on November 3rd, 2011 following a long and courageous battle with Parkinsons Disease.

He was born August 18, 1927 in Swanton, the son of the late Cyril & Ethel (McMillan) Dodd. He was a 1944 graduate of Williamstown High School in Massachusetts.

Russell was a resident of Sheldon since 1945 where he purchased the home farm with his father. Since then the farm has expanded with his two sons because of his insight, business sense and hard work. He owned and operated the dairy farm for over 50 years. After a tragic motorcycle accident in 1953, Russell met the love of his life Eleanor, who was his nurse. They married in June of 1955, raised six children and were fortunate enough to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on June 25, 2005. After retirement Russell and Eleanor enjoyed traveling, collecting milk bottles and spending time with grandchildren. He especially enjoyed all of the sporting events that his children and grandchildren participated in.

In 1983 Russ and Eleanor realized their dream of building a new house overlooking the farm. Planning and building the house together made for wonderful family memories. Russell was an active community member serving the town of Sheldon as a Justice of the Peace from 1970-1999. He was also the town lister from 1991-2003, and served as a selectman.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Dodd of Sheldon, and his children, Carolyn and Peter Kittell, Elizabeth and David Girard, Richard and Dawn, Stephen and Lynn, John, Sarah and Edward Cook. His sixteen grandchildren, Seth and Allison Kittell, Linsey and husband Mario Garcia. Mitchell and Samuel Girard. Kristine, Daniel and Abigail Dodd. Jennifer, Ethan and Morgan Dodd. Jack Dodd. Jalen, Quincy, Carley and Cooper Cook. Two great-grandchildren, Azen and Avery Garcia. A sister, Irene Strong and her husband Burton of Craftsbury; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his brothers, Eric, Francis Jack & Kenneth Dodd.

A celebration of Russells life will be held on Sunday November 6th, at 1:00 PM at the Franklin United Church, 5414 Main Street, Franklin with Rev. Jason McConnell officiating. At the closing of the service there will be a reception at the FELCO room in the homestead. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

A special thanks for the wonderful care that Russell received during this past year from Terry, Kimberly and all of his childrens care which allowed him to remain at home.
