BERKSHIRE - Ruth Mary Burfoot, age 76, passed away Thursday afternoon July 7, 2011 at her home with her loving family at her side.
She was born January 2, 1935 in Birmingham, England the daughter of the late Norman James & Edith Florence (Owen) Young.
Ruth attended schools at St. Marys Convent at Offchurch, St. Marys Hall in Brighton, Nursing School at Oxford finishing at University of Vermont receiving her BSC in Nursing in 1986 and the Mother House in Montreal in 1977. She worked for 15 years in oncology at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington and 3 years for Franklin County Home Health Agency.
Ruth was an active member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Enosburg Falls serving as a Lay Reader and on the Alter Guild. She received many certificates of appreciation for her volunteer work with various organizations including Enosburg Food Shelf and Franklin County Home Health Hospice Volunteer until her husbands and her own illness interrupted her efforts. She enjoyed gardening, knitting & sewing. Ruths true passion was her love of her family and she cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Jacqueline Harvie and her husband Duncan of Toronto, Ontario, Annette Burfoot and her husband Frank Burke of Kingston, Ontario, and Frances Grider and her husband Doug of Roanoke, VA; her sons, Christopher Burfoot and his wife Maria of Warren, VT, and Jamie Burfoot and his wife Karen of St. Albans; her grandchildren, Adam and Claire Harvie, Jack, Mia, and Abby Burfoot, Josh Burfoot, Gabriel Burke-Burfoot, Andrew, Timothy, Ben & Caleb Grider; a brother, David Young and his wife Brenda of Hampshire, England; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Michael F. Burfoot on September 25, 2007. Ruth and Michael were married on April 17, 1954. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Patrick Harvie; and her sister-in-law, Christine (Burfoot) McLean.
A memorial service will be held Saturday August 13, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Church St., Enosburg Falls. There will be no visiting hours. Interment will take place in a private family ceremony in the Berkshire Center Cemetery.
