ENOSBURG FALLS - Steven Allen Gervais, age 55, passed away Friday morning August 17, 2007 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington with his family and friends at his sid.
\tHe was born October 23, 1951 in St. Albans, VT the son of Normand & Avis (Garrett) Gervais.
\tSteve was a life long resident of Enosburg Falls, a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a 1969 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. Following graduation he entered the U.S. Navy in 1969 during the Vietnam War receiving an honorable discharge in 1973. He was a partner for 33 years with Normand Gervais & Son, Inc. Dairy Equipment Sales and Services in Enosburg Falls.
\tSteve took pride in the community of Enosburg, serving for 37 years on the Enosburg Falls Fire Dept. serving as Chief and Assistant Chief, and was a member of the Enosburg Prudential Committee since 2002. Steve also served on the Northwestern Medical Center Board of Trustees.
\tSteve was an outstanding friend to all and will be greatly missed. He enjoyed bowling, playing 500 and Texas Hold-em. He also enjoyed kayaking and boating at the family camp on Lake Carmi.
\tHe is survived by his parents, Normand & Avis Gervais of Enosburg Falls; maternal grandfather, Wareth Buster Garrett of Enosburg Falls; his dear companion, Cathy Godin of Enosburg Falls; sons, Tyler Steven Gervais of Burlington, and Simeon Sam Patrick Gervais of Enosburg Falls; Cathys son, Christopher John DesRosia of Enosburg Falls; siblings, David Gervais of West Springfield, MA, Michael Gervais of So. Burlington, and Judy Gervais of Sanford, NC; nieces and nephews, Casey Gervais her husband Joe Ramsey and their children Nya & Celia of Atlanta, GA, Caitlin Gervais and her partner Michael Brouillard of Burlington, Whitney Gervais of Burlington, David E. Gervais of Ft. Hood, TX, and Garrett Gervais of Troy, NH; aunt, Rita Parker of Johnson; uncle, Richard Brodeur of Enosburg Falls; many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Lillian (Lumbra) Garrett; paternal grandparents, Simeon & Lillian (Godin) Gervais; aunts, Yvonne Brown, and Pauline Brodeur; and uncle, Paul Gervais.
\t Funeral services were held Monday August 20, 2007 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Rich ODonnell celebrating the Mass of Christian burial, assisted by Leonard Charron. Altar servers were Nathan & Tobias Flowers. Pianist and soloist was Kirsten Hayes accompanied by St. John the Baptist Choir. Upon entering church the casket pall was placed on Steves casket by his sons, Tyler & Sam Gervais and siblings, David, Michael & Judy Gervais. Readings were proclaimed by Steves nieces, Casey & Caitlin Gervais. Offertory gifts were presented by Steves sons, Tyler & Sam Gervais, Niece, Whitney Gervais, and Chris DeRosia who was like a son to Steve. A eulogy was given by Steves brother, David Gervais who also shared many thoughts and memories written by many of Steves family and friends with special memories written by family friend Ronald Larose.
Following the Mass, Steve was taken to his final resting place at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Enosburg Falls by the Enosburgh Fire Department on their Engine One Truck. Pall Bearers were Enosburgh Fire Department members and Steves friends, Thomas Shover, Terry Wright, Mark LaRose, Robert Gleason Jr., Jim Gleason, Mark Guilmette, Joey Clark, and Michael Wright. The remaining members of the Department assisted with the care of their fellow firefighter. The funeral procession to the cemetery passed Steves home where Ladder Trucks from Enosburgh & Richford hung the American Flag. Following the committal prayers by Fr. ODonnell, the American Legion Post 42 honor guard accorded the U.S. Navy veteran military honors, presenting the American Flag to his sons Tyler & Sam. Also, words written by family friend Connie Burns were shared in honor of Steve. Concluding the cemetery services St. Albans Dispatch transmitted the final alarm in honor of Steve followed by the tolling of the bell.
\tIn attendance were delegations from the Fire Departments of Richford, Bakersfield, Berkshire, Franklin, Sheldon, Swanton Village, Fairfax, St.Albans Town who offered an honor guard at the church, St.Albans City, Milton, Colchester Center, Malletts Bay; Vermont State Fire Fighters Association; Enosburg Ambulance Service. Also in attendance were delegations from the Enosburg Falls Prudential Committee, Enosburg Falls High & Middle School, Enosburg Falls Elementary School, Franklin Northeast Supervisory Union, Enosburg Falls Lions Club, many area state representatives, dairy farms and local businesss.
\tVisiting hours were Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
