RICHFORD - Sylvia Cabral, age 66, passed away on Sunday, March 09, 2014 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born November 7, 1947 in St. Albans the oldest daughter of the late Gerald & Francis (Cameron) Gauthier of West Enosburgh.
Shortly after graduation she married Stephen Taylor of St. Albans; they had one daughter together. In 1983 she moved to Indiantown, FL and while there she married Lonnie Counts. They owned and published the Indiantown News for nearly two decades. Lonnie passed away in 2001 following a year-long battle with cancer. While married, the couple opened a sanctuary specifically for cats with chronic health problems that would not find homes in regular shelters. It was known as Catsylvania and completely supported and operated by Lonnie and Sylvia.
Prior to moving back to her native state of Vermont, Sylvia married Joseph Cabral of Port St. Lucie, FL; he was a retired U.S. Marshall. The cat sanctuary was moved with them to Vermont. Joe passed away in April of 2005 following a heart attack.
She is survived by her daughter, Angela Ward and her husband Gary of Cabot, VT; grandchildren, Stephen Rawson of Enosburg Falls, Sarah Rawson of Highgate and Garan Ward of Cabot; a great grandchild, Ashton Rawson of Enosburg Falls/Swanton; a sister, Geraldine Gauthier of Ballston Spa, NY, an aunt, Germaine Zweeres of Swanton and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses, 1122 Sampsonville Road, Enosburg Falls, VT.
In lieu of flowers, Sylvias last request was for good, quiet homes with no children or dogs to be found for her beloved cats, which all have up to date records and photos.
