HIGHGATE – Sylvia R. Ploof, age 88, passed away unexpectedly with her beloved cat, Willow by her side on September 12, 2021 as a result of a house fire in Highgate.
She was born in St. Albans on June 6, 1933 to the late Charles T. & Sarah (Thompson) Nye.
Sylvia married the love of her life, Robert Ploof on April 24, 1954. She proudly and diligently worked as the Highgate Town Clerk for 23 years. She raised a wonderful family and was involved in any organization possible. Sylvia was faithful parishioner of the Highgate Methodist Church. She was a past president and dedicated member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah’s. She was part of the PTA, VFW, and helped at Camp NEOFA for 26 years, just to name a few. Sylvia crocheted and donated over 500 Afghan blankets for multiple families and friends. She loved going for rides to visit her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she looked forward to breakfast every Sunday at Cody’s Diner and dinner at the Lucky Buffet. Sylvia loved having everyone at her house for holiday meals and family dinners.
She is survived by her sons, Alvin Ploof and his wife Joyce of Swanton, Stephen Ploof and his wife Janice of Highgate, Keith Ploof of Highgate, Daniel Ploof and his wife Joan of Fairfield, and Gary Ploof and his wife Jenny of Highgate; grandchildren, Tonya and Pete, Troy and Jennifer, Shawn and Amanda, Jason, Rob and Jess, Josh and Lindsey, Jesse and Kayleigh and Brittany and Chris; great grandchildren, Hunter, Colby, Emily, Mariah, Jaksen, Kendalyn, Molly, Emma, Isobel, Abigail, Keegan, Grayson, Ryder, Clara and Jensen; brother, Charles T. Nye and his wife Louise of Highgate; brother-in-law, Allen Ploof and his wife Barbara of E. Montpelier; and several nieces, nephews and special friends. Besides her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, Robert in 1996; brothers-in-law, Milo and (Eugene) Dale Ploof; and sister-in-law, Shirley Ploof.
Family and friends are invited to Sylvia’s Life Celebration events to include visitation on Monday, September 20, 2021 from 2-4:00 PM with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 PM at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT 05488. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Sylvia’s family would like to thank Missisquoi Valley Rescue, local Fire Departments and a special thanks to neighbors and friends for their dedication and help during this tragedy.
