Taylor Pyke

May 25, 1930 — December 28, 2011

ENOSBURG - Taylor Pyke, age 81, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday December 28, 2011 in the comfort of his home.

He was born May 25, 1930 in Paterson, NJ, the son of the late Robert & Marie (Taylor) Pyke. At an early age, he developed a love of nature and the wilderness, spending much time with his family in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. He was keenly intelligent and insightful, and befriended anyone with sensitivity and sense of humor to match his own, regardless of station or position in life. As his early headmaster at Governor Dummer Academy said of him, Beneath Terrys outward calm he had a sturdy independence and integrity of mind.

He was an exceptional athlete and was recruited to Middlebury College for his football and ski jumping abilities. It is there he met his wife of nearly 60 years, Helen (Chase) Pyke. They raised 6 children together, first in Missoula, Montana where Taylor loved to hunt mountain lion, fish the streams of the Lolo Pass and compose short stories while working as a city fireman. They later moved back East where for many years he owned a farm in Richmond, Vermont.

With a relentlessly restless intellect, Taylor was a longtime promoter of an invention based on a planetary rotor configuration, believed to be a more efficient and cleaner internal combustion engine. He has worked with, and been closely associated with the parent company, currently Planetary Rotor Engine Company (PREC), for more than 40 years.

Taylor loved and valued the simple things: wood, fire, stone and observing nature around his beloved pond in the Cold Hollow Mountains. He was a warm keeper of the hearth who served as a magnet for family and friends from afar. He will be remembered for his story-telling abilities, his keen wit, and as a compassionate husband and empathetic father. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Chase) Pyke; a son, Robert Pyke of Guadalajara, MX; a daughter, Anne Peel and her husband David of Washougal, WA; a daughter Lindsay Fleming and her husband Bruce of Baltimore, MD; a son, John Pyke of New Hope, PA; a son, Grantley Pyke and his wife Joyce Lombardi of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Backus, Emma and Sophie Peel, Emily and Adeline Fleming, Atlas and Ramona Pyke; and a sister, Judith Robertson of New Hope, PA.

For those who wish, contributions in Taylors memory may be made to the Vermont Food Bank, 33 Parker Road, Williston Industrial Park, Barre, VT 05641.
