EAST HIGHGATE - Virginia L. Lee, age 80, passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born December 2, 1929 in Suffolk, VA the daughter of the late Paul A. & Dorothy E. (Hackett) Stokes.
Virginia has been a resident of East Highgate since 1978 and was a former resident of Alburgh and Barnes Corners, NY where she lived on the family farm. She was very active in the Episcopal Church having played the organ and taught Sunday school at various parishes and more recently she was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Enosburg Falls.
Her life centered around raising her children and her grandchildren. While raising her family she attended college receiving her associates degree. She served as librarian at the Alburgh Elementary School and Highgate Elementary School. She was a para educator at the Franklin Elementary School as well as taking part in the Foster Grandparent Program. She finally worked as a para educator at M.V.U. in Swanton until she suffered a stroke in 2003 causing her to retire.
Virginia was an accomplished pianist and played the harpsichord. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and making braided rugs. When she was younger she was an avid water skier and enjoyed snowmobiling and swimming.
She is survived by her children, Hollister Holly Mattraw and his wife Karen Kimball of Machias, ME, Beth Lagraff and her husband Steve of Natural Bridge, NY, Faith Mattraw of Burlington, Truman Lee of St. Albans, Karen Lee and her companion Peter Laroche of Franklin, and William Lee and his wife Kelley of Fairfield; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; her siblings, Myron Peter Bullard and his wife Kathleen of Saranac, NY, James Bullard and his wife Diane of West Stockholm, NY, and Deborah Choiniere and her husband Gerald of Highgate; several nieces and nephews; Besides her parents, Virginia was predeceased by a granddaughter, Ellen May Mattraw; and siblings, Eric Bullard, Beverly Stokes and Bruce Stokes.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 12:00 PM at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 323 Church St., Enosburg Falls. There will be no visiting hours.
