MONTGOMERY, VT/SAFETY HARBOR, FL -Winston Lewis passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 15, 2019 with her loving husband, Timothy Chapin, and her four children by her side. Winston lived and loved with grace and beauty and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Winston was born on February 19, 1939, the third daughter of John Shelby Lewis, MD and Elizabeth Maud Harris, in Carbondale, Illinois. She grew up surrounded by family and enjoyed much love, travel and adventure with her five siblings, Sally Williams, Elizabeth Kamm, Katherine Wharton, John Lewis, and Mary Kountze.
Learning was a life-long passion. Winston graduated from the University of Illinois in 1961; obtained a masters degree in Psychology from Sangamon University in 1977; and was awarded a Ph.D. from Antioch University in 1984. Her lifes work was as a clinical psychologist, practicing privately in Burlington, Vermont from 1990-2001. She was also on the faculty at the University of Vermont Medical School.
Winston married Robert OConnell in 1961 and had four children; Peg, Brian, Tim and Amanda who were her greatest joys. She instilled in her children and grandchildren the curiosity of things beyond the natural world, the joy of nature and gardening, and provided them with the love to explore their own paths. Her love and passion for life was further passed on to her beloved grandchildren, Kaitlin, Brandon, Chloe and Cale, who always made her smile. Winston was also fortunate to have Brians wife Kathy OConnell and Amandas husband Ben Ellingson as members of her family.
In 2001, she started a new life with her soulmate, Tim Chapin and spent many loving years sharing their lives together in Montgomery, Vermont and Safety Harbor, Florida. Winston found a home, peace, serenity and a true fondest for the Montgomery community. She served on the Board of the Montgomery Historical Society and as the president of the Covered Bridges Garden Club. She shared both homes with her extended family of Tims four children and six grandchildren; Edwin & Amanda Chapin and his children, Justin & Uma; Todd & Jodie Chapin and their children, Juliet & Gus; Leila & Mike Rice and their children Madison & Tim; and Zachary Chapin & Charli Caspian. Rarely did Tim and Winston dine all 29 at table; but there was always someone there.
